Pruning is a form of tree surgery undertaken proactively to prevent future problems, or remedially to address existing issues, supporting the long-term retention of trees within their environment.
Pruning can:

  • Enhance structural stability by managing canopy size and improving resilience to wind loading

  • Improve light availability by selectively reducing canopy density

  • Reduce hazards through weight reduction, removal of compromised limbs, and management of deadwood

  • Remove diseased or infected growth to help limit the spread of pests and disease.

  • Improve fruit production through appropriate formative and maintenance pruning

  • Enhance aesthetics and views by shaping the canopy or selectively opening sightlines

Pruning services include:

  • Crown reduction
  • Formative pruning
  • Pollarding
  • Crown shaping
  • Deadwood removal
  • Crown raising
  • Crown thinning
  • Orchard pruning
  • Selective branch removal

All pruning work is carried out in accordance with British Standard BS 3998:2010.

Inspection & Reporting

Tree removal is not encouraged where trees can be retained, as preserving healthy trees is our priority.

In many cases,  alternative management solutions are available, and these can be identified through consultation.

However, trees in landscapes living alongside people can lead to decisions for their safe removal when they are:

  • Dead, dying, diseased or dangerous,
  •  Presenting a risk to people or property.
  •  Suppressing other trees or plant life
  •  Growing in an unsuitable or undesirable location

Responsible removal can also create space for the right species for the location to be replanted.

Removal methods:

  • Dismantling- controlled sectional removal in a confined space
  • Straight Felling-  Cutting from the base where space allows

  • Tree condition surveys – inspecting your trees for overall health and identifying any issues.

  • Tree hazard assessments – using industry-standard methods (QTRA) to identify potential risks to people or property.

  • Tree inventories- collect key data about each tree for larger sites.

  • TPO and conservation area tree works application assistance.

Severe weather events, such as Storm Goretti, have caused widespread damage across Cornwall. We provide response services to restore safety and access.

Services include:

  • Dealing with Dangerous or Windblown Trees

  • Removing hazards from broken limbs and hanging branches

  • Assessing the condition of trees post-storm

Tree care focused on long-term ecological and environmental value

Conservation arboriculture is an ecosystem-based, holistic approach to tree stewardship.

It prioritises the long-term health of trees while supporting the biodiversity and ecological integrity of the surrounding environment.

Through sensitive, ecologically led management, we help retain or restore ecological value where it has been lost or can be enhanced, increasing habitat potential and supporting wildlife conservation.

Ancient and veteran tree care is a key part of this approach. These trees are irreplaceable—providing vital habitat, supporting rich biodiversity, and forming a living link to our past. Caring for them requires specialist knowledge to preserve their health, structure, and ecological value for generations to come.

Examples of conservation arboriculture practices include:

  • Ancient & veteran tree care – Specialist management, sensitive retrenchment pruning, risk management focused on retention, and long-term stewardship planning.

  • Veteranisation of younger trees to increase habitat value
  • Cavity and deadwood creation for insects, birds, fungi, and other wildlife
  • Deadwood management
  • Natural fracture pruning
  • Bird and bat box installation
  • Bat roost creation within trees
  • Monolith creation, retaining standing dead trees or tall stumps as long-term habitat structures

Support Systems

In some situations, compromised tree structures can be safely managed using support systems.

  • Dynamic Cabling– Non-invasive support installed in the crown that flexes with the tree, reducing stress while providing stability.

  • Static Cabling – High-strength rigid, permanent support installed in the crown.

  • Static Cabling – High-strength rigid, permanent support installed in the crown.

  • Restraint Cabling –  Installed to prevent branches or parts of the tree from striking property or people below if failure occurs.

  • Rod Bracing-  Steel rods installed through weak or compromised parts of the tree to hold them together and provide strong structural support.
